Cats Protection celebrates volunteers in Warrington

Cats Protection is celebrating International Volunteers Day by shining a spotlight on the incredible dedication and hard work of its volunteers, whose selfless contributions help hundreds of cats each year.

From cleaning, feeding and socialising to admin, driving, and fostering vulnerable felines, volunteers play a vital role in caring for the centre’s cats until they find their forever homes. Diane Leather has been volunteering for the last 10 years, after starting her volunteer journey as a Branch Coordinator, and more recently becoming a fosterer.
Diane said: “I do it because I love cats and want to help as many as I can. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’m making a difference in their lives. I’m currently fostering Big Bird and her siblings, a lively litter of four I call my ‘Sesame Street gang’.
“They came into my care after their previous owners faced financial struggles and could sadly no longer look after them. It’s a such joy to watch them grow and thrive.”
Diane is providing a nurturing and safe environment for all four kittens in the Sesame Street gang during this critical stage of their lives, ensuring they are healthy, happy, and ready for rehoming when the time comes.

Emma Harris, Deputy Centre Manager, said: “Diane truly lives and breathes Cats Protection, and it is a genuine pleasure to work alongside her.
“Since becoming a fosterer, we’ve lost count of the number of cats and kittens she’s helped, including hand-rearing, which is such a demanding and time-intensive role. Before that, she made a huge difference as a Branch Coordinator, helping countless more cats over the years.”
The compassion and dedication of people like Diane means that cats in the centre’s care get a second chance.
Emma continued: “Our volunteers are the backbone of Cats Protection. Diane is just one example of the incredible volunteers we’re lucky to have, and we’d like to give a special mention to Heather Muttock, our brilliant admin volunteer who gives up her time weekly to help with paperwork, reception tasks, and phone support which is invaluable in such a busy centre.
“Additionally, we’re so grateful for the help of Alice and Yiu Cheng, a wonderful couple who are our volunteer drivers. Their compassion and willingness to help whenever they can makes a remarkable difference to the cats in our care.
“Volunteering is challenging but incredibly rewarding. We are always looking for more passionate cat lovers to join our team, whether that be in a centre, shop or as a fosterer.
“Whether you can spare a little or a lot of time, there’s a role for everyone. Volunteering is a fantastic way to learn new skills, meet people, and make a real difference in your community. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!”
