Council and Unite reach agreement to end bin strike with immediate effect

WARRINGTON Borough Council and Unite have met today and agreed positive resolutions to a number of local issues.

In addressing these issues, Unite has agreed to end its dispute with the council and to call off the current industrial action, with its members returning to work immediately.
The council – led by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Hans Mundry and Chief Executive Professor Steven Broomhead MBE – alongside Unite representatives, have reached agreement on a number of local issues, including a commitment from the council to make permanent a number of fixed term roles.
The Council will continue to work positively alongside GMB, UNISON and Unite on a number of areas going forward.

What does this mean for your bin collections?
From tomorrow, Friday 8 December, bin collections will resume.
Workers will be collecting black and blue bin waste and recycling. Please visit warrington.gov.uk/your-next-bin-collection-day to find out what bins will be emptied, and on what days.

The council says that they will do all they can to ensure that normal collections begin again as quickly and as seamlessly as possible.
“There will however be significantly more waste and recycling to collect across Warrington, which means that vehicles will become full more quickly. We’ll do our best to get to everyone on your standard bin collection days.
In order to support bin collections, the two household waste collection points in Orford and at Victoria Park will be stood down immediately. For now, the extended opening hours at our community recycling centres will remain the same.”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Hans Mundry said: “We are pleased to draw an end to the strike action.
“We know people will want bin collections to get back to normal quickly. Please bear with us as we’ll be collecting significant volumes of waste and recycling, while also getting waste services employees back into work.”

We understand people will have lots more questions. We will offer further updates as soon as we can, but our current priority is ensuring that our waste service resumes as quickly as possible.

  1. Dear Members

Unison has been made aware that Warrington Borough Council has reached agreement with Unite regarding the industrial action which has resulted in the withdrawal of strike action with immediate effect. The basis of a settlement is outlined below:
    • The total deductions from pay for staff who have failed to attend work related to the strike action will be reduced by a figure of not less than £1,000 (gross) per member. Warrington Borough Council will ensure that urgent Payroll action takes place to implement this before 22 December 2023, and as close to the 15 December 2023 (payday) as possible.
    • The accrual of holiday entitlement for staff who have not attended work as a result of the entire period of strike action will not be reduced by the council.
Unison has agreed with Warrington Borough Council that the above will also apply to Unison members who have not attended work during the period of the Unite industrial action.

You should return to work with effect Friday 8th December.

Please cascade this message to fellow Unison Members
