Some of the Most Popular Construction Vehicles in the World

You’ve probably seen heavy construction equipment in action, but do you know what is the most popular heavy construction equipment on the market today? If not, you’re in luck as here we are going to a deep dive into this equipment to see exactly what it does.

Excavators

Excavators are arguably the most used piece of construction in the world. Excavators by Doosan are normally on the scene of most projects. Although they are known for earthmoving, your average excavator can be seen dredging rivers, demolition, heavy lifting and tree felling.

The beauty of this machine is that the cab and digging bucket can spin 360 degrees making them very versatile.

Backhoe

Despite the name, you have probably seen hundreds of this tractoresq design. The hydraulic digging bucket at the back is where the hoe names come from, while the loading bucket at the front makes it ideal for excavating trenches. As well as earthmoving it is also used to lift heavy loads.

Bulldozers

Bulldozers are not just the ultimate child’s toy but serve a very practical purpose in that they are excellent for removing the loose soil and rock thanks to the hydraulic metal plate at the front. The plate can be lowered to a particular depth to make the vehicle more effective.

Graders

Primarily graders are used to flattening surfaces thanks to the blade that sits below the cab. This can be lowered into the ground and thanks to precise depth control, can be used to scrape away debris leaving the surface flat.

As such, they are often used in the laying of roads before the asphalt layer is applied. Other uses are to remove dirt or snow from roads.

Wheel Tractor Scrapers

Like graders, this piece of equipment excavates and flattens soil. It is a vehicle of two parts with the front dedicated to scraping soil and the back a hopper that collects what is scraped. Connecting the two is a conveyor belt. When the hopper is full the vehicle trundles it off to the dump yard.

Trenchers

If you were laying pipelines or cables, the chances are you would use a trencher to get the job done. They come in two types a wheeled trencher which features a metal wheel with teeth around it, and a chain trencher which features a long arm with a digging chain.

Wheeled trenchers are preferred for harder, tougher soil.

Loaders

You have probably seen loaders shifting materials into dumper trucks that scuttle it away. They feature a large bucket on the front which scoops up material and lifts it. Like most of these vehicles, they come in either wheeled or tracked variations.

Tower Cranes

Look over most city skylines and you’ll see several tower cranes hoisting construction material to where it needs to be.

Supported by steel trusses, they feature a jib and counter jib that balances the weight of what is being lifted. Quite a remarkable piece of equipment.

Construction equipment is essential to industry and the world wouldn’t be the same without them!
