A motorist was lucky to escape with minor injuries following a collision that resulted in the M6 Northbound being closed this morning.
Emergency services helped rescue the driver of the vehicle who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
There were long delays on the M6 near Wigan after the motorway was shut following the crash as traffic was stopped on the northbound carriageway, between junctions 26 for Orrell and 27 for Standish, since shortly after 6.30am.
The closure led to almost five miles of congestion on the motorway, according to National Highways North West.
Although congestion in the area has now eased, motorists are being advised to find alternative routes as the motorway is expected to remain closed northbound between junction 26 and 27 for resurfacing, for most of the day.
This was the scene on the M6 J26-J27 this morning. Driver taken to hospital with minor injuries after being extracted from the car by Fire & Rescue Service. The #M6 will remain closed NB at J26 (and from the M58 J6) for repairs & resurfacing for most of the day. @MerPolTraffic pic.twitter.com/1FKrm1xpYE

Update – The traffic within the closure is queuing past J26, and traffic is struggling to exit here. Whilst traffic is being released within the closure we expect this congestion to ease and traffic will then be able to exit freely at J26. Thank you pic.twitter.com/oGT3rgn0A0
