THE driver of a van belonging to a Warrington charity had a lucky escape last night when Storm Arwen brought down a tree at Walton Gardens.

The vehicle belonging to Warrington Disability Partnership’s Disability Trading company was crushed by a tree coming down in the high winds.

The vehicle had been parked on the car park while volunteers were setting up this year’s Santa’s Grotto at the park, which opens today.

Meanwhile, the high winds brought down trees in other parts of Warrington, including one which blocked Stockport Road at Thelwall last night, near the junction with Bell Lane.

Warrington Borough Council moved swiftly to have the road re-opened within two hours.

A Tree was also brought down on Hough Lane, Walton, blocking the Bridgewater canal with numerous reports of other trees coming down, including the A49 at Winwick.

Shortly before 10.30pm fire crews were called to reports of a partial building collapse on Arnhem Crescent, Orford.
On attendance, they discovered the outer skin of a gable end of a house had been damaged by the strong winds.

Firefighters isolated the gas and electric supply to the house and assisted with the clear up.

Meanwhile, Storm Arwen battered the UK with gusts approaching 100 mph in some parts.

Two men were killed in separate incidents, one died when a tree fell on his car in Antrim, Northern Ireland, while another was killed in Ambleside, Cumbria.

North West Police reported that 120 lorries had become stuck in snow on the M62. Some parts of the country were also hit with power cuts.

A rare red “danger to life” weather warning for parts of the \uK expired this morning, although amber and yellow warnings for high winds remain in place across large parts of the country.
