Elliott at the double as Yellows win away again

WARRINGTON Town continued their excellent away form with a 3-0 win at high-flying Avro.

Ben Elliott struck two goals to add to Reece Daly’s first half opener as the Yellows made it back-to-back wins on the road following Tuesday’s success at Ashton and their seventh in nine this season.

Even though the numbers available to Paul Carden hadn’t improved, with Harry McHugh dropping out of the team, his side carried on from where they left off in midweek with a fine away performance.

Callum Edwards was excellent in an unfamiliar central midfield role, and it was his neat footwork and turn that set-up the first goal for Daly, who curled a shot in to the bottom corner from the edge of the box to open the scoring on 12 minutes.

One of Warrington’s impressive youngsters Rio Hawkins had the next chance, winning the ball back for himself and then scampering forward, it opened up in front of him and he will have been disappointed that his left-foot shot in space was straight at goalkeeper Jon Robinson.

The Yellows felt they were denied a penalty midway through the first half when Elliott was shoved to ground in the box by Jack Morrow as he went to shoot through on goal, only for the referee to wave it away.

A period of pressure, including four corners, came to nothing before Daly was flagged offside when through on goal.

It took until the 42nd minute for the home side to muster any sort of opportunity, Max Harrop’s weak shot from distance taking a few ricochets to land at the feet of Emerich Poilly, who played against the Yellows for Bamber Bridge recently, but he sliced his shot wide.

Avro changed their system at half-time as they tried to find a way back in to the game, but it was Elliott who had the first chance of the second half, forcing a save out of Robinson from the corner of the box.

Elliott perhaps earned himself a bit of karma when doubling the lead just before the hour, he shrugged off Morrow on the left, and as Avro called for a free-kick, Elliott took the ball in to the box and squeezed it home inside the keeper’s near post for only his second Yellows goal.

Within five minutes, he had another. Good work by Edwards in midfield won the ball back and he drove forward, sliding it through for Elliott who took one touch around the keeper and then tapped it in to the empty net for 3-0.

There was no way back for Avro, though Mateusz Hewelt was sharp when he was called in to action for the first time, saving at full stretch to his right to deny Harry Salt’s first-time effort.

He later denied Benito Lowe as time went on, but it was a well-earned and comfortable three points for Carden’s side, who now take on Altrincham in the Cheshire Senior Cup on Tuesday.
