TWO brothers are being hailed heroes after catching a burglar red-handed outside a flood-damaged property at Sankey Bridges at 6am on Saturday morning.

Sean and Liam Heggarty, caught the burglar in the act of filling up a rucksack outside the property of an elderly couple on Rostherne Close.
Sean aged 29 and Liam aged 23, were able to apprehend the burglar until police arrived to arrest the burglary suspect. It is the second time a property has been targeted by burglars since some homes in the area had to be vacated due to flooding.
Describing the two brothers as “local heroes” local Cllr Amanda King, who has been helping provide emergency supplies in the area, said: “It is bad enough that people have been forced out of their homes due to the flooding and now properties are being targeted by burglars.

“Thankfully there are a lot of good neighbours in the area all looking out for each other and burglars need to know if they are going to come here they are most likely going to get caught.”
At the height of the floods around 200 properties were affected, with some residents having to move out into local hotels or other accommodation. Most properties are now occupied but the worst affected are still empty.
“It is the second burglary in Rostherne Close in the space of a week and I am so happy someone has been caught in the act as hopefully, it will help deter others.
“Everyone has got their eyes and ears open looking after each other now and there are also extra police patrols in the area. So the clear message to anyone thinking of carrying out a burglary in the area is – you are highly likely to get caught!
“I would like to congratulate our local heroes Sean and Liam for being so vigilant. They have done a great public service,” added Amanda.
Meanwhile, work continues on providing emergency support and supplies for those affected by the flooding. While some homes remain empty after being flooded with raw sewage, others are still damp, with many elderly people living in the area.
