“Affordable” homes plan opposed by nearby residents

PLANS for four “affordable” two-storey houses on green land at Burtonwood, Warrington are being opposed by 12 nearby residents – and two local councillors.
Housing group Torus want to build the properties on land at Mitchell Avenue, Burtonwood and the scheme also involves the demolition of existing garages.
Borough councillors Alex Abby and Cathy Mitchell are converned that the site has an unacceptable access and is too close to existing dwellings.
But planning officers will recommend approval when the scheme comes before Warrington’s development management committee on Wednesday.
Residents say the site is used as a play area by local children. If they go elsewhere it will become a safeguarding issue.
They also argue that the houses are not needed as another, larger development is being built nearby and they believe green sites should not be used even if there is a need for more housing.
Public transport is poor in Burtonwood, they claim.
Officers claim the proposal is acceptable, given the character of the wider area and the design of the properties respects the area. They say there will be no significant harm to ecology and that the development has been designed to respect the privacy of existing residents.
