Eyesore toilets to be demolished -a decade after they closed

TEN years after a campaign to re-open the public toilets at Stockton Heath ended in failure, the eyesore building looks set to be demolished.

Warrington Borough Council has submitted an application for planning consent to demolish the toilet building at the Forge shopping precinct to be demolished.
The site is needed to enable a plan to resurface and expand the Forge car park.
About 12 years ago, the building – which included disabled toilets as well as men’s and women’s sections – was closed after the borough council decided the cost of keeping it open could not be justified. There was also an issue over inappropriate behaviour.

But Stockton Heath Parish Council, supported by Appleton Parish Council, launched a campaign to have the facility re-opened for the benefit of shoppers in the village. It ended in failure when the borough decided the cost could not be justified
After the building was closed it was repeatedly attacked by vandals.
Now council chiefs have decided the toilets should be removed and the site used in connection with the improvement proposals for the adjacent car park.
The Cheshire Archaeology Planning Advisory Service has indicated that although the site is within Warrington’s Area of Archaeological Potential it is unlikely that there will be any disruption to any significant below ground archaeological remains.
