DESPITE an eviction notice being served and the start of legal proceedings more travellers have arrived at an illegal encampment on the Appleton and Grappenhall Heys border.
There are now seven caravans and associated vehicles on the privately owned land which forms a layby at the junction of Witherwin Avenue and Lumb Brook Road.
Initially four traveller families from Ireland set up the illegal encampment earlier in the week, with more vehicles arriving this weekend.
Local Cllr Ryan Bate said: “Having taken the first steps of issuing an eviction notice, clearly the relevant authorities need to step up their efforts to move the encampment on.
“This also draws attention to the urgent need for Warrington Borough Council to make a decision on the much-needed transit site. Such a facility would hopefully remove instances such as this.”
A section 77 notice was served on Wednesday, giving the group, which initially consisted of four or five caravans, until 12noon on Thursday to leave. The group failed to adhere to the notice and have remained on site.
A total of seven caravans were on site on Sunday.
Warrington Borough Council say paperwork has been prepared for their legal team to request a court date and a summons will be issued in due course.
Local MP Andy Carter visited the encampment last Tuesday afternoon and has been liaising with the borough council in a bid to have the encampment removed.

more legal traveller sites = less illegal encampments.
