COUNCILLORS at Warrington have approved a plan to extend a mid-19th century cottage on Green Belt land – despite an officers’ recommendation that it should be rejected.
Now the scheme to extend Swiss Cottage, Canal Side, Grappenhall can go ahead.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee decided the scheme, which involves demolition of an existing detached garage and construction of a part-single-storey part-two storey extension, could be approved after hearing there were no objections from neighbours.
Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council had also raised no objections and borough councillor Mike Biggin supported the scheme.
He said the extension would give the building a more cohesive design and appearance.
Planning argued that the scheme should be refused because it would have an unacceptable impact on the openness of the Green Belt and would cause some harm to the Grappenhall Conservation Area. They said the plan would bring no public benefit to outweigh that harm.
The borough’s conservation officer also opposed to the proposals on the grounds they would would have a detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the original dwelling and the character and appearance of the conservation area
But the committee voted to allow the proposal to go ahead.
