School attendance officer to run London Marathon

SCHOOL attendance officer Darren Willcock is to run the London Marathon this year to raise money for the National Autistic Society.
Mr Willcock, from Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School, Warrington, is already in training – in all weathers.
He said: “This is one of the hardest things I have challenged myself to do.”
Three years ago, Mr Willcock’s nine-year-old son was diagnosed with autism.
“As a family we fought for a specialist provision and the help he needed. There are days where we crave normality like other families, where a stroll to the shops or a trip to the park is not a challenge and doesn’t result in a meltdown.
“We never knew where we could access support but I was fortunate enough to work with students that were on the autistic spectrum and use some of their strategies that helped them to cope. Life is never easy and every day is a different challenge.
“This has led me to apply for a charity place and run for The National Autistic Society. I want to raise awareness so the wider community understand more about autism and how they can support someone so they access the correct support through The National Autistic Society.”
Mr Willcock has also been busy organising events in school such as bake sales and form challenges, as well as having bucket collections at community events.
