Loft conversion approved against planners’ advice

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have approved an application for a loft conversion at a semi-detached house – despite being urged by officers to refuse it.
The proposal involves a house in Burnside Avenue, Stockton Heath and worried members of Stockton Heath Parish Council who feared changes to the roof style could impact on the street scene.
But borough councillor Graham Welborn pointed out that all 32 houses in Burnside Avenue have been extended in one way or another and, as a result, the road already has an interesting and varied appearance.
Planning officers said that while there had been many alterations to houses in the road, the roof form in the majority of cases remained substantially unchanged
They claimed a change from a hip-style roof to a gable roof would result in a significant and detrimental impact on the property itself but also on the wider street scene.
Similar extensions in the road had involved detached, rather than semi-detached houses.
But members of the development management committee decided the alteration were accepted and gave the extension the green light.
