VOLUNTEERS are being sought in the Warrington area to act as independent observers at protests and demonstrations where the police are present.
Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane is seeking people to act as “critical friends” providing him with feedback.
Mr Keane, a former borough councillor at Warrington, says the initiative offers an exciting opportunity to get involved in policing.
He said: “Volunteers will gain a unique insight into policing by attending any major protests or demonstrations to observe police activity and interaction with demonstrators and the public.
“This is crucial to ensure that the public have a voice in policing and that both the public and I can be confident in the integrity of our police service.
“The Independent Observers will act as ‘critical friends’ providing me with feedback which will directly assist me in holding the Chief Constable to account and help to maintain and enhance trust and confidence in policing.”
To undertake the role, observers will need to have strong communication skills, the ability to offer impartial views and to provide critical appraisal from the perspective of an independent person.
Observers will also have to live or work in the Cheshire Constabulary area and be available at short notice on occasions.
