SOME events in the 2022 Commonwealth Games could be held in Warrington.
The idea has come from Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, who is backing Liverpool’s offer to host the Games.
He said: “The Commonwealth Games would have enormous economic and social benefits for Liverpool, and potentially, Warrington. We will be fully supporting Liverpool in its quest to host the Games.”
Liverpool has offered to host the Games after current host Durban stated it may no longer be able to do so, due to financial restraints.
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, has written to Sports Minister Tracey Crouch to express the city’s interest, after Commonwealth Games officials hinted another host might be needed.
Cllr O’Neill, has welcomed Liverpool’s proposals and is offering Warrington’s full support. He believes that Warrington could have a strong involvement, and that a number of the borough’s venues could host events.
He said: “The Commonwealth Games would have enormous economic and social benefits for Liverpool, and potentially, Warrington. We will be fully supporting Liverpool in its quest to host the Games.
“We will also be proposing that some of the events could be held in Warrington – for instance, the Rugby Union 7s, which our Halliwell Jones Stadium would be well equipped to host.
“In addition, archery could be held at Walton Hall, canoeing events could take place on the River Mersey and lawn bowls could take place at our refurbished Bank Park.
“The 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia will attract 70 nations, 6,600 athletes and offer 11 days of sporting and cultural events. It’s an extraordinary festival of sport and culture which will bring on – as in Manchester and Glasgow, who previously hosted the Games  – a legacy of economic and social benefits. We want to share this with Liverpool.”
