FIVE members of Appleton Parish Council got busy with hedge trimmers to remove a road safety hazard in London Road.
Ivy, growing along a wall on a 50-yard stretch of the road between Warren Drive and Delphfields Road, had reduced the width of the pavement by more than half, forcing pedestrians to sometimes step into the road.
So council chairman Brian Axcell, accompanied by councillors Jane Bilsland, Ken Arnett, John Price and Irina Axcell, spent an afternoon cutting back the growth.
Cllr Brian Axcell said: “We found it an enjoyable afternoon and it has certainly made a difference. It was worrying because pedestrians, including children, were having to step into what is a very busy road.”

I think a nice hi-viz jacket would have afforded them some safety from the traffic. Maybe gloves and goggles as well?
Was the landowner of the debris alerted that it was causing a safety hazard – or like others they don’t think pedestrians walk on footpaths and let their hedges over grow onto pavements?
Why put the onus on others to alert a landowner that his/her foliage is intruding dangerously or inconsiderately on to a public highway or pavement?
Great work. Would love to see the risk assessment for that hedge trimmer. No hi vis this is terrible
