Last green bin collection of the year

THE last green waste collections of the year in Warrington will start next week – and with charging set to be introduced in March – could be the last for many.

Green bins should be placed at the kerbside on the usual day between Tuesday, November 15 and Friday November 25 and the service will resume in March next year.

But borough council recycling centres will still take green waste throughout the year.

In fact, the last collection of the year may well turn out to be the last collection ever for many people.

The proposal to start charging £30-a-year for emptying green bins from next March – revealed in Warrington-Worldwide on Monday – has angered many people.

Council chiefs have predicted that take-up of the garden waste collection service could fall to around 35 per cent if charges are introduced and the reaction to Monday’s announcement seems to confirm this.

Many people are warning that they will not pay for the service and will put garden waste in the black bin instead.

The council’s executive board meets on Monday to consider the issue and is expected to approve the charge.

Take up of the service in other areas where councils have introduced a charge varies from 25-50 per cent.

Currently, 79,000 green bins are emptied by the council every other week at no charge.

  1. Emptied every week at no charge ??? the charge is part of our council tax bill so we have all paid. I don’t see how money will be saved, if only 5 bins on one street need emptying then the same lorry still has to travel to that road and drive down the length of it to empty the bins.

  2. How can honestly you think you are not charging we are both fully employed and pay a ridiculous amount of council tax each month that is for your services. If costs need cutting then get people claiming JSA to earn what they think is free money !!!! To do the job.
