A LYMM woman took top prize in the first-ever creative writing competition held by Stockton Heath Writers Group.
Liz Hedgecock’s short story “Life to the Full” was judged the winner out of more than 60 entries.
She received a £100 cash prize donated by local company Knight Corporate Finance.
Liz, who has also written novels and won other writing awards, was inspired by technology.
She said: “I wondered what reaction computer software would have, when faced with an actual human relationship.
“It’s interesting to wonder how an all-knowing logical and controlling machine would cope, when faced with human emotions.”
Liz started writing after attending a work related course on improving communication skills.
Second prize went to Geraldine Snape for her poem “The End of the Line”. She received a £50 prize, sponsored by project management firm Fifth Day.
Writers group spokesman Mike Jackson was surprised and delighted by the number of entries the debut competition attracted.
He said: “It’s great to launch our 2016 Anthology with this competition, which saw over 60 writers, from all walks of life, enter prose and poetry. The judges have spent many hours being entertained and impressed by the entries – it was a tough call, but congratulations to Liz and Geraldine!”
Both the winning entries will shortly be posted on Mike’s blog www.mjshorts.wordpress.com along with the judges’ comments.
Stockton Heath Writers Group welcomes everyone and meets on the last Thursday of the month at Stockton Heath Library, 6.00pm – 8.00pm, to encourage new talent and share tips on getting published.
The Stockton Heath Anthology 2016 will be available on Amazon later this year.
