Netto closing down sale creates police traffic warning

A half price closing down sale at Lymm’s Netto store resulted in a police traffic warning for motorists to avoid the area.

Netto announced at the start of the week that the store would be closing next month and a 50 per cent off sale which started today led to heavy traffic congestion on Rushgreen Road, Lymm.

Cheshire Police advised motorists parking in the area to park with caution and to avoid the area if possible.

The half price sale attracted large queues, with many people returning to the store to fill up trollies with cut price bargains.

Netto opened in the UK through a partnership between the Danish firm and Sainsbury’s. But the two companies made a joint decision to end what was regarded as a trial project.

Netto was originally introduced in the UK in 1990 but left in 2010 after it sold its 198 stores to Asda.

Its second attempt at gaining a foothold involved 16 stores in the north of England, in partnership with Sainsbury’s. The Lymm store opened last November.

About 400 jobs will be lost nationally as a result of the closure.
