What is the future for Lymm’s Netto store?

LYMM councillor Ian Marks has expressed his disappointment at the impending closure of the village’s Netto store and is now questioning the future use of the purpose built building.

Cllr Marks said, “This is very disappointing because the store has only been open for such a short period of time.

“During the planning and development phase, our Netto certainly hit the national headlines and Lymm came over in a rather unflattering light.

“I believe the developers were talking to Waitrose and M & S at the time of the consultation but talks fell through and Netto arrived on the scene.

“Some of their products were excellent and good value but people could not do their full weekly shop there which may have been part of the problem.

“For many weeks I felt the car park looked rather empty whenever I drove past.

“It is quite clear that Sainsburys have bigger fish to fry with their proposed acquisition of the group that owns Argos.

“The big question now is what will happen to the site. The building was custom-built for Netto so how adaptable it would be if another store is interested
remains to be seen.”

The store which opened only eight months ago, is to close in August – along with all 16 other Netto stores in the UK.

Another Netto store, planned for the site of the Sportsman’s Arms at Penketh, will not now open.

The store was surrounded in controversy at Lymm, even before it opened in Rushgreen Road, with many local people saying they would prefer an upmarket store, such as Waitrose or Marks and Spencer.

Around 400 jobs will be lost nationally, including more than 20 at Lymm.

  1. We only went once and weren’t very impressed really as it wasn’t a patch on Aldi or Lidl. Maybe one of those will want it. Same layout and design as theirs too so they could move straight in.
The hard work of getting planning permission and costs of building have already been done by Netto, Maybe Netto will make quite a profit on the sale of it too 😉

  2. Don’t know what Netto Ian Marks has been talking about but can’t be the one in Lymm. It is busy every day and yes lots if us villagers have been doing our weekly shop there for months. Just check out local Facebook posts and you’ll see the disappointment from us locals who are saddened that Netto is closing. Really hope it will be another affordable shop where we can do a weekly shop without having to travel outside the village.
