Illegal waste: clearance operation may continue next week

ABOUT 100 tonnes of waste illegally dumped in Liverpool has been moved to Warrington’s Arpley landfill site it was claimed today – but the clearance operation could have to continue next week.
The bulk of the material is being transported to the Gowy landfill site, near Chester, however.
A total of 1,800 tonnes has already been moved but there are still around 1,000 bales of waste still to be moved from the site where it was dumped off Soho Street, Everton and where it has caused a plague of flies.
Local residents insist there are still many tonnes of material to be moved- and officials admit they cannot be sure how much waste has been dumped.
Liverpool City Council says it was originally believed the waste could be cleared this week, but that the work may now have to continue next week
Originally, as reported by Warrington-Worldwide last week –  the waste was due to be shipped abroad through Hull.  But port authorities refused to accept the material and it is believed a criminal gang may have dumped it at Everton and three other sites – one of which could be in the Warrington area.
A spokesperson for FCC Environment, who operate both the Arpley landfill site and the Gowy site  said: “The waste in question is about 800-1000 tonnes of ‘fly tipped’ material left in Soho Street, Liverpool around 4-6 weeks ago.  Liverpool City Council has arranged for the site to be cleared following the serving of an enforcement notice. The bulk of the material was transported to FCC’s Gowy landfill site based in Cheshire for direct disposal.
“FCC operates all of its facilities to the highest standards and are fully permitted to receive this waste. FCC has full environmental management systems in place at both sites including pest control in line with our permit requirements.”
Residents of the Everton area have been plagued with flies for more than a week, although they believe the problem is easing.
People living in the Sankey Bridge area of Warrington have complained for years about problems caused by the Arpley site, which is due to close next year.
The Environment Agency is investigating the situation with a view to taking legal action against those responsible for dumping the waste illegally.
