MP seeks to remove hereditary peers from House of Lords

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is co-sponsoring a bill in the House of Commons aimed at ending the “anachronism” of hereditary peers in the House of Lords.
Focus of the bill – the “House of Lords Reform (retirement of Hereditary Peers) Bill will be the removal of hereditary peers from the House of Lords.

Ms Jones said: “ This measure has previously been agreed in principle by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords but never acted upon.
“ This is the clear next step in reform of the second chamber and I believe it is about time this issue was raised again.
“ While there are differing views on how best to reform the Lords in the long term I think that this anachronism needs urgent reform. “

  1. The increasing gaggle of failed politicians (and who really should hang up their boots) sent to make weight for their respective parties are as much of a hinderance to our democracy as the sons of the sons of noblemen of old. But getting rid of them will take even more time to achieve, because politicians are as reluctant as aristocrats to grow old gracefully.
