Victory takes Warrington Town top of the league

WARRINGTON Town returned to the top of the league with an impressive 0-4 away day Victory at Ossett Town on a quagmire pitch.

With Northwich’s game against Glossop North End postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, Warrington’s victory saw them open up a three point gap on their title rivals, who now have four games in hand – with the clubs meeting at the Winner Recruitment Stadium next Saturday.

Warrington’s victory saw them extend their unbeaten league run to nine games, with eight wins and a draw.

Despite Warrington having most of the possession chances were few and far between in the opening half hour – the only real chance falling to skipper ciaran Kilheeney on 12 minutes when he shot straight at the keeper from close range.

But Warrington’s possession eventually paid off on 35th minutes when Nathan Burke rifled the ball home from 12 yards out to give Town a 1-0 advantage at the break.

With the rain starting to come down it just took three minutes for Warrington to exten d their lead after the break as Chris Gahgna got the ball into the back of the net from an acute angle.

Town’s next chance saw Daniel O’Donnell head on to the crossbar on 53 minutes and two minutes later Ben Deegan had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for off-side.

Ossett then had their best spell of the game forcing three consecutive corners but Warrington’s defence stood firm.

Town then broke up field and Deegan was pulled down in the box giving birthday boy Kilheeney the opportunity to score from the penalty spot to make it 3-0.

This signaled the introduction of recent signing Joe Holt to come off the bench for Gahgan and he almost scored with his first touch but was denied by the keeper.

Ben Wharton, for Deegan and Warren Beattie, for Kilheeney, were introduced for the closing stages as Warrington continued to dominate.

They eventually added a fourth when Jay McCarten headead over the advancing keeper into an empty net to complete the scoring.

Ossett’s keeper Backhouse made two fine saves to deny Holt and Ventre in the closing stages.

Warrington are back in action on Tuesday evening in the Cheshire Cup when they are at home to North West Counties Northwich Manchester Villa, kick off 7.45pm, before the game many are billing as a “title showdown” with Northwich Victoria next Saturday, kick off 3pm.

After the game manager Shaun Reid said on social media:”On reflection , yesterday was a very good performance on a terrible pitch.

“In 90 mins the home side had one shot on target. Willsie had one save to make. Their keeper was their best player and he conceded 4 goals. All in all my lads were strong and it was a efficient performance. Big week coming up.

“People of Warrington let’s make next Saturday’s atmosphere as good as Exeter.”
