A SCHOOL chef from Warrington is bidding to become North West school chef of the year – with the possibility of going on to compete in the national competition.
Jenny Hancox, from Appleton Thorn, who is a chef at Bridgewater High School will be going head-to-head with three other North West school chefs in the regional final in Manchester on Thursday November 12.
Her three rivals are from Duckinfield, Poulton-le-Fylde and Barrow-in-Furness.
The competition is organised by LACA – Lead Association for Catering in Education – and the national final will be held next March.
Dishes that feature on the contestant’s menus demonstrate the exceptional culinary expertise of school chefs.
Ingredients and adventurous themes have been drawn from exotic locations right across the globe with flavours and textures set to challenge the taste buds of the judges at each regional final.
Examples of the imaginative main courses being prepared at the North West heat include: Southern style Quorn Burger in a bun with Salad and Baked Vegetable Crisps and Italian Chicken; Chicken Breast with Bacon served in a rich Tomato Sauce accompanied by Dauphinoise Potatoes with a Lemon and Herb Crust and a Carrot and Poppy Seed Salad. The desserts are equally tempting and include Courgette, Coconut and Lime Sponge and Lime and Coconut Panna Cotta with Spiced Pineapple Salsa
The preparation, cooking, creativity and presentation skills of school chefs will be put to the test.
With a maximum of £1.60 to spend and just one and a half hours
to prepare their dishes, each entrant is required to produce a healthy balanced two-course meal comprising of a main course and dessert that would appeal to 11-year-olds in school.
The nutritional content of contestants’ dishes must comply with the new School Food Standards, as specified by the Government’s School Food Plan which was introduced in all schools in England in January.
