WARRINGTON Town return to FA Cup action on Saturday – bringing back memories of the finest hour in the club’s history.
It was November 7 2014 that Shaun Reid’s men defeated League Two side Exeter City in front of a sell-out crowd at Cantilever Park to mark the club and the town’s first ever game in the FA Cup first round proper with victory.
That remarkable journey ultimately ended in the second round, with a courageous defeat at Gateshead, cheered on by almost 1000 travelling fans.
For those involved, the memories will last a lifetime.
The next chapter in Warrington’s FA Cup story is a Preliminary Round clash at Abbey Hey, of the North West Counties League.
It is the first of five rounds that Reid’s side would have to navigate to return to the first round proper for a second successive season.
Perhaps more important than that though is an immediate return to form for Warrington, who were humbled 4-1 by lowly Burscough in the league on Tuesday night.
Manager Reid said: “There’s excitement because the FA Cup has got that buzz about it.
“I wish it was a league match after Tuesday night!
“I went to watch them on Monday. They’ll give everything. They work hard, they work hard for each other and stick together.
“If my players think they’ll turn up and stroll through, then they’re mistaken.
“We’ve got a bit of a name for ourselves in the FA Cup now so it’s a cup final for them and after Tuesday it’s a cup final for me now.
“We’ve got to be ready. It’s the greatest club competition in the world and if you can’t get yourself up for that then it’s time for me to walk away or for some of these players to walk away.”
The winner of Saturday’s tie between Abbey Hey and Warrington Town will play Ashington or Thackley in the First Qualifying Round.
