SCHOOLS in Warrington are joining the 100 mile challenge – and pupils can reach the target by running, swimming, walking, jogging or cycling throughout the 2015/16 academic year.

The challenge is run by Active Cheshire and New Balance to encourage children to become more active and so improve health, wellbeing and self-esteem.

It kicked off at Barrow Hall Primary School and continued on to Bradshaw, Beamont, St Wilfrid’s and Great Sankey Primary schools.

The launch events have been packed with sporting and physical activity ideas to give the children lots of opportunities to try different exercises, with fun, games, mascots and the first mile walk to kick things off.  Active Archie, the Active Cheshire Mascot even challenged Wolfie to a race!

John Littler, Headteacher at Barrow Hall Primary School said: “As a school we are excited by this as it is a great opportunity to get our children active.  It is a challenge that all our pupils can get involved in, encouraging them to have a fit and healthy lifestyle.”

The children who take part in the challenge receive a pedometer to record their activity.  Schools record the miles completed and prizes are given to outstanding participants.

Anne Boyd, CEO of Active Cheshire said: “We are delighted that the staff and children of these five Warrington schools are embracing this challenge.  The 100 Mile Challenge embeds ‘active habits’ with children and working with New Balance has meant we could get local children doing this in an accessible and engaging way.  We would particularly like to thank New Balance for partnering with Active Cheshire to deliver SparkStart locally for the second year.”
