WARRINGTON Fairtrade Steering Group finished runner-up in the Best Media Campaign Award at the national Fairtrade Supporter Conference in London.
During Fairtrade Fortnight, the group hosted a visit from Costa Rican Fairtrade coffee farmer Gerardo Arias Camacho, who spoke about the way Fairtrade has transformed the life of his family and other growers in his co-operative.
In addition, events were held in Golden Square and Warrington Market, offering Fairtrade tastings.
Throughout the year, the group also work with a large number of schools and churches in the borough, to help them learn about and support Fairtrade.
Trish Powell, secretary of the Warrington Steering Group, said: “We are thrilled to have won this award in the Media catergory and already have some plans of how we will spend the prize money to further raise awareness of Fairtrade.
“The group is very grateful for the support of local newspapers, magazines, radio stations, council, churches, Warrington borough transport, the Market and Golden Square for their help in publicising our activities and generally promoting Fairtrade in the borough.”
The award was presented by Fairtrade International chief executive Michael Gidney CBE, and the group also won £400, to be reinvested in their campaign to bring a fair wage to farmers and workers.
The overall winner of the Best Media Campaign was the Mossley Fairtrade Group.
