Wolves back on top

WARRINGTON Wolves maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they moved to the top of the Super League table with a hard working 24-10 victory away at Hull FC.
The Wolves dominated much of the game as they wore down a valiant Hull defence as the hosts held on to a slender 6-4 lead until an hour of almost relentless attacking finally paid off for Tony Smith’s table toppers.
Warrington scored four tries in a 12-minute spell, with man of the match Chris Riley (pictured top) adding a second to his first-minute try and Joel Monaghan also crossing twice along with one from Micky Higham, who celebratd his 100th career try.
Riley gave Warrington the perfect start with a try after just a minute as he dived in the left corner after a flowing move.
But Joe Westerman responded for Hull after ten minutes as he crashed over from close range – and Ben Crooks converted to put the hosts ahead, but from then on they were forced to defend as Warrington dominated possession and territory.
Trent Waterhouse looked to have broken through for the Wolves but after a long video referee review it was deemed that he had been held up and Hull survived.
Hull’s hard working defence a#eventually tired following wave after wave of Warrington attacks.
They lasted until the 56th minute when Monaghan rose superbly to gather Stefan Ratchford’s up and under and Brett Hodgson added the extras as the visitors deservedly took the lead again.
Six minutes later Richie Myler’s bullet pass saw Riley dive in on the left corner for his second score.
Then a weary-looking Hull defence could not stop Michael Monaghan bursting free and setting up Higham to dive in under the posts for the 100th try of his long career.
Joel Monaghan then scored his second try as he out jumped the Hull defence again making it 24-6 for the Wolves. With Brett Hodgson off the pitch Stefan Ratchford couldn’t add the extras.
Hull managed a late consolation try from Crooks but it didn’t take the gloss off an outstanding performance from a Warrington team missing Skipper Adrian Morley, Ben Harrison and Lee Briers all through injury and the suspended Ben Westwood, emphasising the strength in depth of the Wolves squad.
