Historic transport day

PLANS are in the pipeline for a major new event with Lymm’s first “Historic Transport Day” as part of the annual village festival.
The festival is inviting historic working boats and pleasure boaters to join in the fun from June 20 when the festival kicks off with the traditional Foodfest. Sunday June 23 will be Historic Transport Day when the boats will be joined by classic and vintage cars, motor-bikes and bicycles on the May Queen field as well as indoor model railway displays.
“We are aiming to make this a great family day out – not just for Lymm folk but for many visitors from further afield” explained event co-ordinator Alan Williams. Apart from Lymm’s own permanent attractions – including its great selection of eateries and shops – there will be food, drink and entertainment on the May Queen field. Plans include a drive into the village of vintage cars and a sail past of historic boats. Organisers are also aiming to provide the opportunity for visitors to board a vintage bus for a tour of the village or take a trip along the canal.
“This is clearly going to be a major project,” said Alan. “But we have already had an enthusiastic response from a number of local organisations including The Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, The Bridgewater Canal Company, Lymm Cruising Club and any number of car, motor-bike, bicycle and model rail enthusiasts clubs. It really feels like an event that has been waiting to happen !”
The festival team are also aiming for a schools day on Friday June 21 to take advantage of having the historic working boats in the village so that local youngsters can gain an insight into their village’s canal heritage.
If you would like to be involved in any part of the event – maybe by exhibiting or perhaps even helping with the organisation – please give Alan a call on 01925-754080 or email [email protected]. All ideas and input welcome.
