A FORMER Royal Marine Commando told pupils at a Warrington school about his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Andy Grant, of Liverpool, visited Sir Thomas Boteler High School as part of the enrichment lesson for Year 11 pupils.
He is an Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran of six and a half years who, while serving in Helmand Province in Afghanistan, was critically injured when an improvised explosive device was triggered by one of his colleagues in front of him.
Andy suffered 27 separate injuries and was in a coma for two months. In 2010 he had his right leg amputated below the knee. After years of rehabilitation he gives motivational talks on behalf of BLESMA, a charity that supports war veterans who have lost limbs in conflict.
Mike Downes, a welfare officer for BLESMA, also attended to talk to the year 11’s about the valuable work it does. Pupils are planning fundraising events to support the organisation.
