A SPECIAL eight day “tweet-a-thon” to highlight the pressure that NHS emergency teams are under introduces a new star – a “virtual community matron.”
An NHS spokesperson at Warrington said: “Matron is back! And she’s doing her rounds on Twitter!”
She is supporting the national NHS Choose Well campaign and is using Twitter to help give people the self-care advice they need this winter, in a bid to take pressure off A&E and 999 ambulance services.
The spokesperson said: “She’ll be diving straight in by highlighting the great work done by real life doctors and nurses in A&E departments across the country.
“They have all taken her example and are embarking on a special eight day tweet-a-thon to highlight the pressure that NHS emergency teams are under and the importance of making sure that we all use A&E and 999 ambulance services properly.”
Matron (@MatronSays) gives self-care, with a bit of straight-talking celebrity gossip on health issues. She will highlight unnecessary calls to services, such as man who requested an ambulance after being bitten on the finger by a guinea pig.
Evidence shows that more than one in 10 people admitted to A&E do not need the service. The virtual matron will educate people on the best type of treatment for each complaint ranging from self help to visiting the pharmacy or GP.
The tweet-a-thon comes live from inside 26 different hospitals in real time.
