Police station moves – after 104 years

A WARRINGTON police station is to “move” half-a-mile down the road – after 104 years.
The police station at Great Sankey is to move to neighbouring Penketh, but will continue to serve both areas.
Cheshire Police sees the move as building on its commitment to neighbourhood policing.
The current police station stands on the crossroads of Liverpool Road, St Mary’s Road and Station Road, Great Sankey. The new location is on Meeting Lane, Penketh and will provide improved facilities for members of the public to access policing services and accommodate the full neighbourhood policing team required to deliver local community policing.
The move from Sankey to Penketh will take place on Monday (December 17) and are advising the local community that due to the relocation there will be no public Helpdesk service on that day.
Inspector Richie Watts said “This is quite an historic day for police in Warrington and we intend to minimise any disruption to residents during the transition from the old building to the new one in Penketh.
“I would like to make local people aware of the closure of the Helpdesk on the day we move and apologise if they are inconvenienced by the closure, but it is necessary. The Helpdesk facility will open on December 18 at the new premises in Penketh and will provide a much better environment for members of the public to access policing services.
“The nearest open helpdesk facility will be at the main police station in Arpley Street, Warrington. If you live in Sankey, Penketh or the surrounding area and need to speak with someone face to face on December 17 you will be able to do so at Arpley Street Station.”
The move is necessary because of increased numbers of officers covering the area.
Sankey Police Station was built in 1908 to serve both Great Sankey and Penketh and, as was tradition in rural communities, stands alongside the three other important buildings which were at the heart of community life the Parish Church, the Post Office and the pub.

  1. There are far too many Police vehicles Nick…. no matter when you drive past Arpley Street, there are usually a dozen or more parked up….. no wonder they are always crying out for money; they are driving round in fancy BMW traffic cars these days too!!
