DETECTIVES at Warrington are urging residents to be on their guard following a spate of distraction burglaries.
Three incidents were reported on Tuesday afternoon – and in two cases cash was stolen from elderly residents.
One was in Epsom Gardens, Appleton, where a man called at a house and told a 92-year-old woman there was a problem with the electricity supply and he needed to check the mater. He was allowed in and stole cash.
He was about 5ft 8 inches tall, stocky with a round face and aged 30-40.
Another incident was in Grange Avenue, Latchford, where a man of similar description and told the occupant – another 92 year-old woman – he needed to check the gas meter. He was allowed in but the woman became suspicious and the man left without taking anything.
The third incident was in Banbury Drive, Great Sankey where a man called at a house and said there had been an explosion nearby and he needed to check the gas meter. He was allowed in by the 85-year-old male occupant and stole a quantity of pounds and euros.
He was also of similar appearance and police believe the three incidents were linked.
DC Stephen Page said: “We are urging all residents – particularly the elderly and vulnerable – to be extra vigilant when answering the door to any unexpected callers.
“If you are unsure regarding the identity of the caller then keep them out. Always use a door chain if you have one when answering the door and always ask for – and check – the identification of people claiming to be working for a company or organisation.”
Anyone with any information about the incidents is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
