Candidate slams police cuts

CRIME prevention budgets in Cheshire are being cut by 60 per cent, according to John Stockton, Labour’s candidate in the Police and Crime Commissioner election in the county.
Mr Stockton (pictured), a borough councillor at Halton said it was “absolutely shocking” the cut was being made, on top of a reduction of 250 police officers in the county.
He said: “This is the equivalent of £706,865 less to spend on important measures like CCTV, street-lighting, projects to tackle gang violence and many other measures used to help keep our streets safe.”
According to Mr Stockton, police initiatives such as Operation Staysafe – which helps keep young people off the streets – and Operations Ford and Clio – checking that all is well with the night time economy – will be put at risk.
In addition there will be threats to drugs dogs operations, the dedicated drugs team, underage alcohol sales prevention and road side vehicle checks.
Burglary and fire safety days of action will be axed.
He added: “People will want to hear why this out-of-touch Government have decided that cutting our police is not enough, they are also cutting crime prevention too, and putting us all at risk.”

  1. Just another political comment. He doesn’t tell us what HE is going to do. I for one , am fed up with politicians not putting the people and country first. I don’t want more of the same.

  2. Well my postal vote has arrived so I’ll be off to the post box very shortly when it warms up a bit 🙂 Afterall if you don’t vote you don’t have a say and the turnout is predicted to be low and close.

  3. “Afterall if you don’t vote you don’t have a say “…. even if you do vote you don’t get a say Geoff. The “saying” is left to those you vote for who tend to forget what those who voted for them actually want and do things their own way….. until it is time to come crawling for votes again 4 years later of course

  4. Well it’s up to people like you Baz to check their record and remind everyone exactly what is has been like. I know you’re not slow in coming forward so if you think that they are under performing – remind them what they promised especially if they have underperformed or under achieved or stand yourself which will give you a platform.

I wonder what you would think of candidates leaving a deposit against their manifesto and if they fail to deliver against it the deposit is not returned after their term of office and/or candidates stand again for another 4 years?

Somehow I don’t think that these would gain favour from anyone so what is the method that you propose?

  5. Geoff…. I know your track record as a councillor is pretty good from what I hear and I am not knocking you (although I do have my little digs at the wildlife stuff…. only in jest most of the time I hasten to add) but I just don’t see that the party political structure that we and other councils have to put up with is working. Labour get an idea, Lib dems and tories oppose it…. regardless of how beneficial it is to the town, it always seems to be the case that it must be opposed at all costs. We then get the crazy ideas about traffic management; traffic lights on the cockhedge roundabout as an example…. it just causes chaos when those lights are on, tailbacks into the retail park and all that (the same with Alban; all the works to improve the Hawleys Lane, Long Lane , Winwick Road issues and then a total overlook of the impact on that retail park with customers now staying away because it can take 20 minutes to get off the place…….the whole place just needs some new ideas and some new thinking and the removal of the old guard career politicians we seem to be lumbered with…… as for standing myself…. no time I’m afraid; too busy earning money to pay the business rates for you lot to waste!!

  6. Are you saying that you ,one of Labour's leading lights is going to be away when this election is on – shows how seriously, or othewise, you and your fellow politicians take this election, doesn't it.
