Council to build on floods success

TOWN Hall chiefs at Warrington have vowed to build on what is seen as a successful response by emergency services to the recent flooding in the town.
During a period of extremely heavy rainfall, relevant council services worked closely with other emergency services to help ensure the safety of residents, proactively tackled any problems and issued advice and guidance for residents.
Although Warrington was not affected as severely as other regions, the council’s contingency plans prevented major problems.
But, unfortunately, there were certain areas within the borough that suffered from flooding.
Focus has now been placed on addressing the underlining causes of this flooding and assessing if and what further action is needed.
Flood risk plans can then be updated with a view to further improving responses to similar situations in the future.
As part of this process, the council will be consulting with councillors, partner agencies, stakeholders and taking on board comments already logged by members of the public.
Cllr Linda Dirir (pictured), the council’s executive member for highways, transportation and climate change, said: “Our services worked very hard during a period of high levels of rain and flooding to help alleviate problems and support residents and I’d like to thank them all for their work.
“The events have provided us with invaluable evidence and experience of what the impact would be on Warrington and reviewing our services following such incidents is a positive and valuable exercise.
“There is no room for complacency and we can now revise our plans accordingly and take positive action so that we can be even more prepared for the future.”

  1. This Cabinet Member has not commented on the very expensive flood saving work currently being installed along Knutsford Road. This must, surely, have an impact on any future flooding otherwise it will be a waste of money. If successful it will limit any work required in any future high rainy periods.
