A SCHOOLBOY’S design has been chosen to represent Warrington in a competition to create the official mascot for next year’s Rugby League World Cup.
Birchwood High School pupil Luke McCracken’s design was chosen to represent the town and judges from the Rugby Football League will be meeting soon to decide which of about a dozen entries from World Cup host towns should go onto a shortlist of three from which the eventual mascot will be chosen.
The successful entry will then become a key part of celebrating the competition in October and November next year.
Luke, aged 12, and his family were given free tickets to last week’s Warrington v Huddersfield game.
The Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Steve Wright, was on hand to offer his congratulations and best wishes.
Luke said: “When I thought of ideas for my design I decided to put on different flags from around the world and about bringing people together, but I didn’t expect it to be chosen.
“When I was given tickets to watch Warrington Wolves I was really looking forward to it as I had never been to watch a rugby match before and having my picture taken with the Mayor of Warrington was great too.”
Luke will also receive four free tickets to one of the World Cup matches at The Halliwell Jones Stadium next year.
