STUDENTS studying construction trades at Warrington Collegiate have been given the opportunity to put theory into practice and the chance of a job in the future.
The college has teamed up with repairs and maintenance company Manchester Working Limited (MWL), a Warrington Borough Council public buildings maintenance partner.
MWL has committed to offering 225 work placements for plumbing, joinery and electrical work over the next three years, with up to 25 intakes of students every year.
The placements are designed to give students practical hands on experience to help them increase their skills set and knowledge. This experience is also important for building up their portfolio of work, which is often a requirement of final qualification assessments.
The first intake of students started their placements in January, which involved them spending a minimum of a week working alongside qualified tradesmen on public buildings across Warrington.
Dave Coulburn, Partnering Manager, Manchester Working Limited said: “This initiative has already proved to be a great success. We have been very impressed with the quality of students in respect of their work ethic and skills, which is a credit to themselves and Warrington Collegiate. Manchester Working together with our partner Warrington Borough Council is proud to support this programme to ensure the next generation of trades men and women have the best start to their careers.”
Carpentry and Joinery student Jason Leech, 18, from Paddington, says, “I really enjoyed being on site. My college course had prepared me well, so I felt really confident on the work placement and I felt I could demonstrate my skills. The people on site were very encouraging and gave us lots of help and support.”
Vanessa Conlin, Warrington Collegiate Work Placement Coordinator said: “Manchester Working have committed to providing a long term placement schedule with Warrington Collegiate, which will enhance student study and future job prospects. By offering students quality work experience with an assigned trade mentor to guide and support, students are being given the opportunity to develop and enhance both their trade and employability skills.”
“Students are also being provided with an insight into the real world of work and all those students who have participated to date have really enjoyed and benefitted from the experience.”
