POLICE patrols have been stepped up at Warrington after a teenage girl was raped late at night
The attack took place in School Road, Orford at about 10.45pm on Sunday (February 12). The victim was a 14-year-old girl.
Shortly afterwards, a 23-year-old local man was arrested but freed on bail following questioning.
The girl was walking along School Road when she was approached by an unknown man.
He stopped and spoke to her before subjecting her to a serious sexual assault.
DS Mike Evans, who is investigating the attack, said: “The victim is receiving help and support from specialist officers.
“We are currently carrying out a number of lines of enquiry in relation to the incident, including forensic enquiries, house-to-house enquiries and CCTV enquiries.
“We are appealing for help from the public and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was in the area at the time and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously.
“We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have any information in relation to the identity of the offender.
“We take all incidents of this nature extremely seriously and will do all we can to trace the offender and ensure he is brought to justice.”
The offender is described as aged 20-30, around 5ft 9 inches tall, of medium build with short dark hair.
He had a stubbly beard, spoke with a local accent and was wearing a black tracksuit and pink and red woollen gloves.
Inspector Andy Ross, of Warrington central neighbourhood Policing Unit, added: “Patrols have been stepped up in the area to offer reassurance to the local community.
“Thankfully incidents of this nature are uncommon, although I would like to take the opportunity to reiterate important safety messages.
“We would urge people, particularly lone females, to follow basic safety advice.
“Remain vigilant when walking alone at night, maintain an awareness of your surroundings and personal safety and always make sure that someone knows where you are going and when you are due back.
“Avoid poorly lit areas and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101. February.
Information can also be passed on anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
