Town bids for green bank

WARRINGTON Borough Council has submitted a strong bid to be the host town to locate the HQ of the new Green Investment Bank.
The Green Investment Bank (GIB), which the Government is establishing, will aim to accelerate investment in the UK’s transition to a green economy.
Warrington-Worldwide revealed as far back as August last year that councillors were considering putting forward a bid for the bank.
Economic studies confirm that Warrington already has a very strong green economy.
The investment opportunities created by the GIB will help the town to grow to become a leader in research and development within the Green technology sector.
Warrington’s submission to business secretary Vince Cable sets out a number of reason why the town is the right site for this new financial institution.
*Warrington is in a prime location at the heart of the North West with excellent transport links.
*As a town, Warrington consistently out-performs most of the rest of the UK in terms of economic indicators.
*Warrington can attract professionals with the right expertise and skills for the new organisation.
*Warrington’s old North West Development Agency building is Government owned, centrally located, of the appropriate size required and has excellent energy standards (it is rated as BREEAM excellent – which is the highest energy efficiency standard) – making it the ideal home for the new bank.
Cllr Terry O’Neill (pictured), leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “We believe Warrington can offer everything required to provide the perfect location for the GIB.
“If we were successful in our bid, it would not only create jobs for the local area, it would also be a tremendous economic boost for the town. In addition, it would help reinforce the Government’s commitment to closing the economic gap between the North and South of the country. A decision is expected in February from the Secretary of State for Business.
‘We would welcome the involvement of local businesses interested in supporting the town’s bid.”

  1. Hang on – It was Cllr Ian Marks Lib Dem that put this forward – Well done once again Lib Dems – Time to say well done to Cllr Marks – Cllr O’neill????????

  2. I don’t care who said what first, we should relish that unusual feeling of unanimity between our political parties. At least we can hope they are both working towards the same objective and Warrington will benefit.
