Finding the scientists of the future

HIGH school students with a passion for science and innovation have the opportunity to earn a Discovery scholarship with high-profile businesses.
Warrington Borough Council has developed the scholarship for year nine pupils with local schools and colleges.
A range of companies are taking part including Daresbury Science Laboratories, Scottish and Southern Power (Fiddlers Ferry), Sellafield (Risley) and United Utilities.
The companies aim to ensure that the UK develops its own future workforce to stay ahead. Currently 70 per cent of postgraduate students studying science and engineering in the UK are from overseas.
Applicants will get the chance to take part in master classes out of school hours delivered by the sponsors.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, (pictured) the council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “We are preparing the scientists and engineers of the future for jobs that don’t currently exist – the top 10 jobs that will be in demand by 2012 did not exist in 2004.
“This sector has phenomenal scope for growth in the future and we need young people to get involved more than ever and it would be wonderful to think the pioneers of the future might come from Warrington.”
Young people can pick up application forms at school and they should be submitted by Tuesday October 18.
