THE Warrington-based Department of Media at the University of Chester marked the 70th anniversary of German’s 
invasion of the Soviet Union with a conference “World War II and the Media”.
The venue was particularly appropriate for the university’s media centre at Padgate was originally a theatre where British and Canadian airmen were ntertained from 1939-1945.
Eleven international and national speakers addressed both contemporaneous coverage of the conflict, and its portrayal in the present-day media. Topics ranged from national and media perceptions of Latvia’s role in the war to the women in “Dad’s Army”.
Guy Hodgson, head of media, said: “This was a truly international event, with speakers coming from Canada, Latvia, Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany. “There is a temptation to have a very UK-centric view of the Second World War but this conference widened that perception and allowed a cross fertilisation of experiences and ideas.
“The range and reputation of the speakers also underlined the growing standing of the university and the department in international academic circles.”
