MORE than 1,000 people have added their names to an online poll backing Warrington’s bid to host the Rugby League World Cup.
It is just a month since the borough council and Warrington Wolves, backed by other local organisations, launched a campaign to host bid for the event in 2013.
The deadline for putting in a bid is April 15 and the council and club are calling on more local people to offer support by going to www.warrington.gov.uk/rugby and adding their names.
Towns across the country are also hoping to be chosen to host games, provide training camps and accommodate teams from around the world. But council bosses believe that Warrington has an excellent chance of being part of event.
Joe Blott, the council’s executive director of neighbourhood and community services said: “We are delighted that so many people have gone online and shown their support. But we are calling on everyone who hasn’t already to sign up and boost our chances of bringing the World Cup to Warrington.
“The whole town would benefit if the World Cup came here. It would give the local economy and our sense of community pride a real lift.”
Andy Gatcliffe, chief executive of Warrington Wolves, added: “The level of support that the borough council is receiving from the borough-wide community really has been magnificent and I would strongly urge everybody to get behind the host bid for the Rugby League World Cup which would of course include our hosting of games here at The Halliwell Jones Stadium. The more support the better!”
