Residents lose takeaway battle

RESIDENTS have lost a battle to stop a hot food takeaway shop opening near their homes.
Warrington Borough Council’s planning committee has approved the conversion of a vacant shop – formerly a convenience store and newsagents – in Warrington Road, Penketh.
The plan was opposed by Penketh Parish Council, local residents and borough councillor David Keane, on the grounds of noise, smells and parking problems caused by the takeaway.
Three years ago, an earlier plan to convert the shop to a takeaway was refused on the grounds it would rob the area of an important local service. But since then a Tesco Express store has opened on an adjoining site and, the committee was told, this meant it was unlikely the shop would ever again be a convenience store.
The meeting heard that Penketh Parish Council decided to object to the proposal because of long-standing complaints from nearby residents about noise and smells caused by existing takeaways.
But officers said they did not consider the takeaway would cause a significant level of harm to the living conditions of neighbours.
There was also adequate parking provision.
