FOURTEEN high school pupils from Warrington were given a taste of nanotechnology and magnetism when they visited the “schools lab” in the chemistry department at the University of Liverpool.
The Year 10 and 11 pupils from Birchwood High attended two hands-on laboratory sessions. In the morning, as well as constructing a “bulky ball” in pairs, they also experimented with gold nanoparticle solutions using everyday products such as tea leaves and parsley.
In the afternoon, they learned about “physics and the environment” and even tried to levitate a pencil in mid air!
The event was organised by Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington – one of 44 Aimhigher area partnerships working to widen participation in higher education by young people from under-represented groups.
Teresa Wong, Aimhigher Cheshire and Warrington vocational development officer (science, engineering and construction) said: “This was a very interesting and challenging day for the students, having hands-on experience in a university laboratory.
“These sorts of events are fantastic for broadening our learner’s minds and gain confidence in what they can do outside a school environment.”
