More children suffering burns

INCIDENTS of children being injured by hair straighteners that are switched off are on the rise, Town Hall chiefs at Warrington have warned.
An investigation by the Northern Regional Burns centre found that children as young as eight months had been admitted to hospital with burns caused by hair straighteners.
In a third of the cases they looked at, injuries were sustained while the straighteners were not in use. This is because they remain at extremely high temperatures for up to 40 minutes after they are switched off.
The borough council is now warning parents of the risks to children and has sourced a product that enables the hair straighteners to be packed away immediately after use, even when at 250c.
The ‘Genie’ consists of a heat resistant mat that the straighteners can be placed on when in use and a pocket for them to be put in when switched off. The pouch can then be closed with a velcro fastener and put away safely.
The borough council has a limited number available at the discounted price of £4.75. They are available through Sure Start Children’s Centres as part of the Safe-buy scheme, along with safety gates, fireguards, plug socket covers and cupboard catches.
Details can be obtained from the Families Information Service on 01925 443131.
