VOTERS in the Bewsey and Whitecross by-election at Warrington go to the polls tomorrow (Thursday).
Five candidates are standing for the borough council seat which has become vacant as a result of the resignation of Liberal Democrat Jo Crotty.
They are Jeff Richards (Labour), Ann Raymond (Liberal Democrat), Lance Reah (Conservative), Lyndsay McAteer (Green Party) and John Mulhall (Independent).
Jeff Richards has served on the borough council previously for 14 years during which time he was Mayor.
Ann Raymond stood as a Liberal Democrat at last May’s election and is well known in the area. She is a single mum with a grown up daughter, Lucy.
Lance Reah is a former Coldstream Guardsman who has campaigned to get Army ID cards accepted as proof of age in clubs and bars. He runs his own security business in Warrington.
Lyndsay McAteer is a founder member of the Green Party in Warrington.
John Mulhall, a former trade union official and long time campaigner on environmental issues, such as the Arpley Landfill site, promises to support “common sense” policies.
A by-election will also take place tomorrow for a vacant seat on Stockton Heath Parish Council.
Laurence Murphy is standing for Labour, Mike Smith for the Green Party and Angie Winnington as an Independent supported by the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.
This election was caused by the resignation of Independent Liz Jewkes.

  1. Well, as the ballot papers go into the box I hope all those from this area who supported the petition to save Bewsey Old Hall for the people of Warrington bear in mind how little their opinions counted to the Lib DEM / Conservative alliance.

  2. Shame that the only thing that could be written in favour of the Tory candidate is the fact that he wanted to get army ID cards accepted as a way that young lads could go and get blitzed! Very community minded…… I’ve seen the way squaddies drink, and the more barriers in their way of the bars the better! Vote independant and keep politics out of the town hall
