Tennis floodlights plan deferred

A CONTROVERSIAL planning application for floodlighting at a tennis club at Culcheth has been deferred to enable councillors to inspect the site.
Members of Warrington’s planning sub-committee will visit Culcheth Sports Club, in Charnock Road before reaching a decision.
The club’s tennis section wants to 10 floodlights, each eight metres high, around the existing tennis courts.
But 20 nearby residents, the parish council and borough councillors Keith and Sue Bland, have lodged objections.
They fear light and glare will spill out from the courts into the rear windows and gardens of nearby houses and that the noise created by tennis players will effect the residential amenity of the homes.
Last year, similar proposals were thrown out by planners on similar grounds.
Officers recommended the new, revised application be approved and argued that the impact of light spillage on nearby properties would be minimal.
They pointed out that noise caused by play would be no greater than at present and that there were no existing restrictions on the hours of use of the courts.
The application will now be considered again at the next meeting of the committee.
