Traders keep watch on roadworks

SHOPKEEPERS at Culcheth are keeping a close watch on road works currently under way in the village – and keeping their fingers crossed that it will be finished in time for the run-up to Christmas.
Work started on September 20 and is scheduled to take eight weeks.
If all goes to plan it should be completed before Victorian Day – the special day when the village’s Christmas Lights are switched on and shopkeepers launch the festive shopping period with a special day of fun and fancy dress, turning back the clock to Victorian times for one day.
But if there are unforeseen hold-ups, trade could be disrupted.
The work is being carried out by United Utilities and involves laying replacement water mains.
Common Lane, Jackson Avenue and part of Warrington Road are affected – but all shops are open and trading as usual, with all the normal car parks operating as normal.
Shopkeepers were annoyed that they received only a few days notice that the work was about to start but so far there has been little disruption for traffic in the village.
