Spirit of the Olympics

WARRINGTON-based The Mersey Forest is bringing the spirit of the 2012 London Olympic Games to the town.
Running Rings, a new project aimed at getting local people active in the forest, is the 100th project across the region to be part of the official London 2012 Inspire programme.
Recognising this landmark achievement, Ambassador for the games Dave Moorcroft presented the forest staff with a certificate at a gala reception at the City of Manchester Stadium.
The project aims to create a regional legacy for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
It aims to encourage people to explore their local woodlands by using several brand new circular tracks – the “Running Rings”.
At least seven woodland tracks, varying in length, for walking or running are to be created across a network of woodlands and green spaces in Warrington, Sefton, Liverpool, Knowsley, St Helens, Halton and Cheshire West and Chester.
Local school children and residents will be invited to get involved with the design and creation of the routes through tree planning and environmental volunteer opportunities.
Once the routes are completed, before the start of the Olympics, The Mersey Forest estimates that more than 25,000 people will use the trails each year.
Forest director Paul Nolan said: “The Mersey Forest’s legacy to the games is the stimulus for the North West to make their region a greener place or just set themselves the personal goal to get fitter physically and mentally with the aid of our woodland trails.
“Around the edge of the trails will be signs and information boards that will link through to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and its values of respect, friendship and equality for all.”

  1. What a great story, which combines my interests running, and nature conservation. Good to see Dave Moorcroft having such a role, I remember warming up for the 12 stage final in Sutton Park when he raced past me on his leg of the race it was like being passed by the Flying Scotsman the physique, speed and power of the man literally blew my away. I can’t remember were Warrington Athletic Club finished on the day but I do remember we had a fantastic day and we held our own against many more Olympians like Moorcroft.
