THE parents of tragic Warrington murder victim Shafilea Ahmed have been released on bail after two days of being questioned by detectives.
Iftikhar Ahmed, 50 and his wife Farzana, 47, were kept in custody overnight after being arrested early yesterday on suspicion of murder.
A police spokesman said: “The man and woman arrested yesterday morning in Warrington on suspicion of the murder of Shafilea Ahmed have been released on bail pending further enquiries.”
The couple were arrested at their home in Liverpool Road, Great Sankey.
Shafilea (right) was murdered in 2003 while still a 17-year-old schoolgirl. Her body was found in the River Kent in Cumbria the following year.
No-one has ever been charged with her murder.
Shortly before Christmas 2004, Shafilea’s parents were arrested on suspicion of kidnap. They were also never charged – and indicated that they may sue the police.
They strenuously denied any involvement in their daughter’s death or disappearance and subsequently put up a £5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of their daughter’s killer.
